✉️ Contact your representatives

This is the most important simple action you can do and will just take a few clicks. NJTA and NJDOT may think they’re independent, unaccountable agencies but ultimately they answer to us. We elect their bosses, so let’s let Governor Murphy and our elected representatives know what we think of this project.

📢 Let NJTA hear it

Call-in and let the NJTA know that we’re here, we’re watching, and we’ll keep up the pressure on this terrible project.

Note: The past practice of the 9am NJTA board meeting is to start with a closed-session of unspecified length before returning to receive comments from the public. This of course creates an undue burden on the public and discourages engagement and transparency.

To [insert representative’s name],

I’m one of your constituents and wanted to ask for your help in speaking out against the NJ Turnpike Authority’s planned widening of I78. This project

  • will increase traffic congestion in the most densely populated county in the state leading to unsafe streets

  • will increase harmful air pollution in environmentally overburdened communities, and add to an ongoing public health disaster

  • will contribute to climate change by working completely against the state’s 2030 goal of 50% reduction of greenhouse gasses

  • and will cost $4.7 billion in the process

In 2019, NJ passed the Environmental Justice Law that states all NJ residents have a right to live in a clean and healthy environment. This project will do the opposite.

Widening highways is an outdated approach to transportation policy that is extremely harmful to our health and our climate. The citizens of NJ deserve smart, future-forward investments in clean and efficient public transportation options instead, as well as projects that mitigation existing harms including capping highways and tunneling highways underground to reduce pollution and reunite divided neighborhoods. We need to be an economy for the 21st century, not one stuck on old ideas already proven not to work.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

This fight is a marathon, not a sprint. Anything you can spare to help will go to things like, holding rallies, FOIA/OPRA costs to scour NJTA’s internal documents, host this website, and more.
